Plans to introduce ’zonal parking schemes’ in Tenby have been backed by local councillors.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the the town council, correspondence from Pembrokeshire County Council’s head of highways Darren Thomas explained that the new ‘Resident Parking Zone’ scheme proposed for certain streets of Tenby would allow for the parking permit holder not to be restricted to a single street, letting them utilise any unused space located in an adjacent street.
“The current permit parking schemes in operation allow residents/businesses to buy a single permit (currently £40 per year) for a nominated vehicle which then allows that vehicle to be parked only in a permit space in the street where the resident lives,” explained Mr. Thomas.
“The ‘Resident Parking Zone’ proposal would look to amalgamate a number of these existing residents parking schemes into a single permit allowing a permit holder to park in any permit space located within those streets.
“This arrangement is likely to be particularly attractive to residents who currently struggle to park within their street due to limited permit spaces or over subscription, but less so to a resident who currently does not experience such problems. The flexibility may also be seen attractive to non permit holders within the zone resulting in additional residents opting to purchase an annual permit,” he continued.
The streets where the new ‘Resident Parking Zone’ scheme has been proposed for in Tenby are - Trafalgar Road/Church Park, Harries Street, Queen’s Parade, Sutton Street, Culver Park, Picton Road, St. Florence Parade, The Esplanade, Picton Terrace, South Cliff Street, and Victoria Street.
“The new scheme would allow maximum use of all allocated permit spaces which in some streets are currently underutillised during certain times of the day,” added Mr. Thomas.
Clr. Laurence Blackhall told his fellow members that he would personally welcome the scheme, as he knew that there were a number of streets that experienced issues raised by Mr. Thomas.
He also backed his colleague Clr. Will Cockford who suggested that the scheme could be varied to allow for trades people to park in the zones when carrying out work at the request of the property holder.
The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane urged residents and businesses effected by these new proposals to respond to the consultations to make sure that they didn’t end up with something that they didn’t want.
“We welcome these proposals, as a number of people have asked for this kind of scheme in the past,” added Clr. Blackhall.
PCC are asking for feedback and comments on the proposals to be submitted in writing by August 31, to the Traffic Section, Pembrokeshire County Council, County Hall, Haverfordwest, SA61 1TP or via email to [email protected]
