At St John’s church on Tuesday (July 23) the audience were given a musical treat by 15 year old Carys Underwood playing a musical instrument called a marimba.

The marimba is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with yarn or rubber mallets to produce a tone.

Carys, who comes from Narberth and is a member of the National Youth Percussion Orchestra of Great Britain, has just completed her GCSEs.

She excited the audience with the Allegro from Sonata in F Major Op.1 No.12 by Handel and followed this up with a delightful piece called Little Prayer by Evelyn Glennie.

The solo spot was concluded with Alla Turca from Sonata in A K331 by Mozart which had the audience giving her a rapturous applause.

Tenby Male Choir were on top form singing all their favourite songs and despite the warm summer evening kept their jackets on throughout the concert.

Visitors in the audience from Canada surprised compere David Blackmore by knowing that Leonard Cohen was the composer of Hallelujah.

There was the usual fun and games with my Grandfather’s Clock which had those who attended laughing at the comments by musical director Ian Williams.

After the second section, Carys Underwood with accompanist Sharon Lusher, returned to play Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet.

Her performance was stunning so much so that compere David Blackmore was lost for words.

Over the last 20 years Tenby Male Choir have given young local talent the opportunity to perform at their concerts and created a platform for them to express their talents.

Tenby Male Choir are always looking for new members. Age makes no difference. The youngest is 26 year of Wesley Davies and the oldest is his grandfather Duncan Hilling who is 93 years. So singing is certainly good for you.

Last year St John’s Church celebrated 150 years and continues a long tradition of meeting the social and spiritual needs of the local community. All the proceeds from the concert went towards keeping this lovely church able to continue this valuable work.

The next performance for Tenby Male Choir will be down in the Harbour on Thursday, August 8, at 8 pm in celebration of the Firefighter’s Carnival.

If it’s a warm summer’s evening why not come and enjoy their concert.
