The Rotary Club of Tenby announced this week that the next phase of the restoration of the iconic RNIB collection box, located on the end of the town's Esplanade, has begun.
To enable the work to continue, the box has been taken to Pembrokeshire County Council's youth offending and prevention service, where the restoration work will be carried out by young people at the centre as part of their reparation to the community.
Assisting with the work will be staff members Keira Blazey and Phillipa Lindsay.
The Rotary Club is extremely grateful to Mr. Nigel Beynon, of Celvac Ltd., Tenby, for arranging the pick-up, transportation and delivery of the collection box to the centre in Pembroke Dock, free of charge using the company vehicle.
Following previous articles in the press, the Rotary Club is very grateful to the many readers who came forward with information about the building in the model, which is the 'Sunshine Home for Blind Babies' in Southerndown, near Bridgend.
The building, formerly the Marine Hotel, was originally opened in the 1940s for the blind by the Tenovus charity, based in Cardiff.
In the 1960s, Tenovus changed to concentrate on cancer support. The home continued until the 1970s when following a change in policy, it was closed and is now a private home.
The re-modelling work will look to maintain and enhance the current scene, given its historic significance.
The Rotary Club of Tenby is delighted to be able to facilitate this restoration work and is delighted that the Pembrokeshire youth offending and prevention service has come forward to volunteer to help with this important work, and the club is looking forward to the return of the model that is both such an important source of income for the RNIB, and an historic landmark in the town, that we can all remember as children!
