On May 14, at the Mariners Hotel, the Rotary Club of Haverfordwest launched 'Winning Ways', a title inspired partly by the 2012 London Olympics and particularly in anticipation of a major and unique fundraising event organised by Haverfordwest Rotary, to be held on June 8, at the Allt yr Afon Restaurant, Wolfscastle.
This event's main sponsor is Conygar Ltd; at the May 14 launch, Conygar's finance director, Peter Batchelor, presented Rotary president, Peter O'Shea, with a cheque for £2,000.
The main speaker was Llangwm 'boy' and one of the most influential personalities in the Olympic movement, Richard Palmer CBE, who during his long and distinguished career attended eight Olympics and held the posts of executive vice-president of the British Olympic Association and technical director of the successful 2012 London Olympic bid. He spoke about the intriguing political background that led to the UK Olympic team's eventual participation in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Rotarian Ian Jacob, also from Llangwm, proposed a vote of thanks.
A memorable moment for Haverfordwest Rotary Club came when member Bobby Brown spoke with passion about the Olympic movement and about his own participation as a 20-year-old member of the 1960 British Olympic football team in California; he also donned (just) his 1960 Olympic blazer. Bobby later had a very distinguished professional career in the game, as a player with Fulham, Watford, Northampton and Cardiff, and as coaching director of the Football Association of Wales.
Some 170 representatives from the local community and businesses have bought tickets to attend the June 8 event, at which there will be a presentation provided free of charge by Graham Webb MBE, a motivational speaker with a worldwide reputation and also a successful businessman, and a question and answer session featuring Honorary Rotarian Ray Williams OBE, former secretary of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and tournament director of the 1991 Rugby World Cup, and former Barbarian, British Lions and Wales centre Tom Shanklin.
Charitable funds will be raised at the evening by a raffle and an auction that feature some truly stunning prizes, including: two Welsh rugby shirts donated by County Sports, one signed by the Wales 2012 Grand Slam winning team, the other by captain Sam Warburton; a unique set of 12 first day stamp covers commemorating the 1980 WRU Centenary, donated by Ray Williams, a day driving some very fast cars, donated by a leading luxury car manufacturer, and many more.
Funds raised on June 8 will be donated to support the Spina Bifida charity SHINE (Cymru) (Graham Webb suffers from Spina Bifida), and a cheque will be presented to William McNamara OBE, founder of Bluestone Wales, who recently showed his personal winning ways by walking to the South Pole to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust.
