If you are a real romantic, then you are sure to love this story.

Meet 80-year-old Marina Canter and 79-year-old Clifford Hayes who are getting married on Cliff’s 80th birthday next month.

The couple met 12 months ago when they both went to Newquay, Cornwall, on a holiday with Silcox Coaches.

“There was no-one sitting next to me and I glanced over and smiled at the two gentlemen opposite,” explained Marina, who moved from Cheltenham to Tenby 18 years ago to be near her daughter.

“Neither of the two smiled back and I thought to myself how miserable they were,” she continued.

“On the second night of the holiday, one of the ladies I was sitting with and I decided to ask the two men for a dance. I danced with Cliff and it went from there.”

Added Pembroke Dock-born Cliff, who lived in Narberth for 40 years where he was a postie and affectionately known as ‘Cliffy Post’: “It was my 79th birthday on the last day of the holiday so I asked Marina if she would like a drink to celebrate it.”

When they returned home, the couple stayed in touch, with Cliff going down on one knee and proposing during a turkey and tinsel break to Llandudno with Silcox Coaches in December.

Now, they will be returning to Newquay on the same holiday, before tying the knot at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, on Monday, March 7.

“The combined age of the bride, groom and best man will be 247,” smiled Marina, who will be given away by her son Alan and attended by her daughter Belinda Vickery as matron of honour. Best man is Cliff’s friend Alex Leese, former landlord of the Angel Inn, Narberth.

Seventy guests have been invited to the ceremony, to be conducted by Canon Andrew Grace, and followed by a reception at the town’s Crown Inn where they are affectionately known as ‘Lord and Lady of Tenby.’

“We are having the St. Mary’s Handbell Ringers, the church bells and have been busy since November making both a birthday cake for me and our wedding cake ourselves,” added Cliff who will be marrying for the first time - certainly not the usual way of celebrating becoming an octogenarian!
