Warm applause greeted Tenby Male Choir, when they entered St Mary’s Church last Thursday (July 11) and again the visitors, were not disappointed.

An excellent concert, which was sponsored by Rhyal Engineering, who are based in Milford Haven, delighted the large audience.

David Blackmore, who is chairman of the choir, was back on duty as compere and eager to engage the visitors, who comprised of travellers from as far away as Australia but the majority seemed to be from our next door neighbours - England.

However, this time nobody came from North Yorkshire so David had to explain the story behind ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’, but following the usual jokes from musical director Ian Williams about ladies and multi tasking, everybody enjoyed taking part in this popular number.

The final song in the first section was African Prayer, which was composed in 1897 and adopted 100 years later as the national anthem for South Africa. This seemed to strike a chord with some of the visitors who seemed to have links to that continent.

Paul Varallo took the solo spot. He sang ‘Tell My Father’ from the musical about the civil war in America and followed this up with the evocative ‘Stars’ from that wonderful musical Les Miserables.

Jill Williams, who is the musical accompanist for the choir, supports Paul during his solo numbers and played beautifully.

Tributes to those who spent their lives working underground in the coal mining industry are always remembered with ‘Working Man’ and ‘Take Me Home’, both bringing warm applause from the appreciative audience.

After the second section, Paul returned to sing in the Italian language a song ‘The Light in the Window’ which the visitors really enjoyed.

He finished with ‘Music of the Night’ from the record-breaking musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ‘Phantom of the Opera’. much to the delight of the audience.

With John Harrison at the organ and several members of the audience joining the choir, the concert ended with ‘American Trilogy’ and had the visitors leaving well satisfied with a splendid evening.
