As the country prepares to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE day, readers might be interested to know what Narberth had planned for the original celebrations.
At a meeting of the Town Council it was decided “that there should be a parade, with a bonfire on the Town’s Moor in the early evening, to be followed by a dance in the Hall for the Welcome Home Fund. There will be services in the Churches on VE day.”
This information comes from Narberth Museum’s collection of press cuttings compiled by Miss May George, a reporter on the Narberth Observer. On the same page she recounts some of the wartime experience of Ray Davies, a Leading Wren in the WRNS, who on her retirement went on to found the Museum in Narberth.
Stationed in Belgium, where she was engaged in guarding secret port information, Ray describes in a letter home how she had visited the Cathedral at Ypres and the Menin Gate - “one of the most striking war memorials I have ever seen.”
The Museum’s planned exhibition on the Second World War has had to be postponed for now but will, thanks to the hard work of volunteer, Sandra Benham, be re-scheduled for when it is safe to do so.
