The 'Walk on Wales' team were given a warm welcome on Monday, October 14, as they continued the Pembrokeshire leg of their Wales Coastal Path charity walk. Joined on the Pwllcrochan to Freshwater West section of the walk by participants from Valero Pembroke Refinery - who sponsored the day's section of the walk - the charity was given an additional boost by a further £3,500 donation, raised by the individual Valero employees taking part.
The Valero employees -Chris Wigginton, security adviser, Keith Thomas, manager fixed equipment, Jamie Main, operations adviser, Mo Pulford, cost controller and Mick Morgan, refinery applications analyst - all previously served in the armed forces, and completed the 12.67 miles distance with the 'Walk on Wales' team, who are carrying a specially commissioned silver baton inscribed with the names of the 50 Welsh Guardsmen who have died while serving their country since the Second World War.
Organiser Fiona Koops, said: "On behalf of us all at 'Walk on Wales', I would like to thank everyone at Pembroke Refinery for the amazing support we had for this section of the walk: for Valero's corporate sponsorship of our event, to all the individuals who took part and raised such a fantastic sum between them, and for the wider support we had from people throughout the course of the day."
Speaking afterwards, Valero public affairs manager, Stephen Thornton, said: "'Walk on Wales' is a fantastic cause, which Valero have been honoured to be associated with. The support they provide to veterans throughout Wales is incredibly worthwhile, and we're proud of the individual efforts our own staff made for these two charities. We wish the 'Walk on Wales' team the best of luck for the rest of this incredible event."
'Walk on Wales' is a charity walk around the entire Wales Coast Path, in aid of the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal and Combat Stress. Set up by Jan Koops and Dai Graham, both Welsh Guards veterans of the Falklands War, 'Walk on Wales' aims to raise £1 million as well as remember and acknowledge the contribution of the Welsh Guardsmen who have died on active service since the end of the Second World War.
The 'Walk' began on August 25 from the Senedd in Cardiff, and will end back in Cardiff Bay on November 2.
