Tenby town council are to write to local organisations regarding the possibility of setting up a ‘town wall trust’.
Councillors have raised concerns in recent times over the upkeep of the historic town and castle walls, leading Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas to suggest that a ‘town wall trust’ could be the best way forward to help maintain them and source funding under an ancient landmarks or heritage scheme.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, she said that she’d like local organisations to be written to on the matter.
“One person from each organisation might have a brilliant idea, so if we get responses, we can hold a meeting to discuss the proposals on how to protect our walls,” said Clr. Mrs. Thomas.
Tenby Civic Society’s chairman David Tudor Thomas recently said that they too shared the town council’s concerns over the walls, stating that the lack of a ‘proper maintenance programme’ was leading to deterioration in their condition.
One idea he touted would be to open the walkway on top of the town walls to visitors, similar to what has been achieved in Dubrovnik, to raise much needed funds for the maintenance of the walls.
