Tenby’s new Mayor-elect hopes to be the ‘driving’ force behind the town council when he takes the seat for the first time in May.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, members were asked to elect a Mayor to fill the role for 2019/20, with Clr. Tony Brown the only councillor to put his name forward for the position.
Current Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, backed her fellow member, telling those around the table that she would be “delighted” to propose Clr. Brown for Mayor.
“I’m sure he’ll ‘have a go at being Mayor’ which is his phrase!” she laughed.
“He is very dedicated to the town, and has gained enough experience on the town council to show us he can be a good Mayor for Tenby,” said Clr. Mrs. Brown.
Outgoing Mayor, Clr, Mrs. Sue Lane, congratulated her colleague on being given the chance to succeed her and don the scarlet robes of office for the first time.
Clr. Brown, who works as a taxi driver in and around Tenby, first joined the town council in 2012, briefly leaving in between, before returning to the role in 2017.
The Mayor-making ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 3.
Speaking after the meeting, Clr. Brown said: “I’m keen to support all the local charitable events and also the many sporting occasions that we are lucky to have take place in the town - anything that benefits the community of Tenby then I’ll do all I?can to help.”
