Oakwood Theme Park played host to more than 1,000 sporty youngsters and their proud parents for the 25th annual Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country event.
The event attracted its biggest ever number of competitors, with 1,046 youngsters taking part from 50 schools.
The races are run at the award-winning attraction every year and this year’s event proved particularly popular with competitors and spectators alike.
Wyndham Williams, Sports Pembrokeshire - active young people officer, said: “More than 1,040 children took part in the races from 50 Pembrokeshire Primary Schools and they were cheered on by scores of spectators including tourists and families.
“Already we have had a few stories from school staff and parents on the positive impact this event has had on their children.
“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the team at Oakwood Theme Park for their kind generosity in awarding first place competitors with Oakwood family tickets and allowing us to hold this fantastic event on their grounds,” he added.
This year, Cleddau Reach School achieved their first overall win at the event, Hook School were the small school winners and Roch School were the dominant girls’ team with Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 winning their respective team awards.
Pete Freeman from Pembrokeshire Harriers, who has been involved in the organisation of the event from the very first race in 1990, said: “The event has grown so much over the years and inspired numerous Pembrokeshire children to take up athletics.
“In 1990, Gerald Codd, Shay Buckley and myself organised the event with help from Corrine Codd, Ann Freeman, Renzo and Ann Rabiaotti.
“We could never have envisaged the success of the event back then. I am delighted, especially as the event has never been cancelled in 25 years!” he added.
Since the inauguration of the event in 1990, many youngsters have gone on to win Welsh Schools’ and Welsh Athletics’ vests in cross country and track events.
