Plans to reintroduce facilities at Tenby train station including a cafe and public conveniences could be in the pipeline.

Providing an update on the situation after sounding Network Rail out about the possibility of re-opening the station building, John Perrett who last year took over station adoption duties at the facility, said that he was still working on the matter.

“I’m trying to get a long term lease off Network Rail as I have people interested in opening it up as a cafe,” said John who hails from Caerphilly and regularly visits the resort via train.

“As the one toilet block is separate to the main building there is a possibility of opening the old ‘gents’ as a mixed wc. It would be limited opening times - say 9 am until 5.45 pm.”

Last year John set about taking on board the task of helping to spruce up the station’s appearance for the holiday season and throughout the year as part of the station adoption scheme, volunteering to offer his help after finding that he had more and more complaining to do to rail authorities about the poor appearance of the facility - many holidaymakers first impression of the resort.

He said that people think that he ‘must be nuts’ to do a 200 mile round trip to water the plants at the station, but took on the volunteering duties, as it had been a ‘bugbear’ for him, as he regularly got off the morning train from Cardiff and the flowers beds were the first thing he saw when visiting Tenby.

Weekly cleaning and maintenance at the train station is undertaken by Transport For Wales’ own maintenance team.

“The planters have been cleared of the dead plants and daffs have been planted ready for the spring,” continued John.

“The two concrete planters have had a change of colour with a coat of white masonry paint. I have a few plans for the new year which include new planters for the east end of the platforms.”

New colourful murals large and small on various parts of the station could also be in the pipeline, an idea that has recently been touted by Tenby town council.

“A website is about to be constructed with a dedicated email address, to feature a history page of the branch line and station with a number of old photos when the station was at it’s peak,” explained John.

“I hope to have up to date info on the station improvement plans soon. I’m also contemplating arranging a survey to see what passengers would actually like to see at the station - but I can’t do anything about the trains! Also the rubbish/overgrowth is on the waiting list,” he added.

Transport for Wales Rail Services undertook a package of minor improvement works at the Tenby station in 2019 which included the redecoration and rebranding of station furniture items including: canopy columns, token kiosks and equipment cabinets, window frames, lighting columns, and external seating.
