The World Day of Prayer is once more meeting for the first time in our area after the Covid19 lockdowns, with two services scheduled for the Tenby area this Friday.
This international movement had its beginnings in the 19th Century when Christian women of United States and Canada began to co-operate in a variety of activities in support of Christian mission at home and other parts of the world. There was a strong concern for the needs of women and children that were often neglected and various organizations were set up to cater for these needs. Prayer was seen as a vital element in this and days of prayer and other prayer events took place, eventually becoming a day of prayer, with many denominations taking part.
From 1927 onwards, The World Day of Prayer spread through the whole world and became an annual, interdenominational event, when there is constant prayer throughout the day from one end of the globe to the other.
Each year, the Prayer Service is compiled by women from a different country. This year it has been prepared by the women of Taiwan, entitled, ‘I have Heard About Your Faith’. With the delicate political situation in that part of the world at this time, it is particularly important that we are able to gather in prayer with them and for them.
The Service this year will be held at the Methodist Church, Stepaside and also at the Salvation Army Hall, Tenby, Friday, March 3 at 2pm. Refreshments will be served after the service. All are welcome – women organise the Service, but it is open to all.
