Tenby will commemmorate those that have fallen in the war with remembrance services this weekend.
An Armistice Day service will take place on Friday, at the War Memorial to mark the day WWI ended, at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918.
The Remembrance Sunday parade will proceed at 10.45 am, from The Hazelwell Club, with the service also at the cenotaph at 11 am.
Due to a restrictive new EU health and safety law a long-standing tradition of launching a maroon rocket to start the two-minute silence for the remembrance services has come to an end.
The town’s Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall recently issued a plea for a way to indicate the beginning and end of the two minute silence, although the town clerk confirmed yesterday that nothing had yet been finalised.
Some suggestions that readers posted to the Observer’s Facebook page comments section - releasing red balloons, one for each name on the cenotaph; a daytime firework, for it’s sound; a klaxon from the tower at St. Mary’s Church; amd an old air raid siren.
Griggles Theatre Shop on Tenby’s Warren Street have dedicated part of its shop front to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday with a special window display.
“I’ve used mainly memorabilia from WW I and II that I’ve just collected over the years, including a photograph of my great great grandfather Edward Grigg who served with the Army Veterinary Corps,” said Griggles owner Roland Grigg.
