Tenby Museum and Art Gallery held a celebratory event on a breezy but sunny Castle Hill on Sunday to mark its anniversary.

The museum was celebrating its 140th year – it was officially opened on 26 July 1878 - and brought this landmark birthday in in style with strawberries and prosecco and jazz.

The event was organised by the Friends of Tenby Museum in conjunction with the museum, and was run by this supporting organisation.

Musicians came from far afield, brought together by Alan Argent’s links with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a seven piece band was formed for the occasion, comprising Alina Miroshnchenk (vocals), Frazer McIntosh (piano), Matheus Prado (bass), Taflan Jenkins (alto sax), Alan Argent (tenor & soprano sax), Charlie Scarr (drums) and George Whitfield (accordion). Strawberries and prosecco were generously donated to the event by Tesco PLC (Tenby Branch).

Welsh Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas gave a 90 second statement at the Welsh Assembly on Saturday, July 21 stating that the museum is ‘one of Tenby’s top attractions’.

“The museum shares the richness of our culture with everyone who visits. Thanks to all of those over the years who have supported the museum and best wishes for the future,” he said.

Clr. Michael Williams, Chairman of Trustees, thanked the Friends and all the volunteers who helped out at the celebration.

“Contributions such as this will help to ensure that the Friends can go on giving their excellent support and the museum continues to thrive,” he remarked.

“The Museum is committed to being part of the community and welcomes everyone who visits or wants to get involved in many aspects of the museum by volunteering.”

Janet Lewis of the Friends of Tenby Museum echoed these sentiments: “It was a great success all round. Great way to celebrate 140 years, raise the profile of the museum and use the bandstand, which must have one of the best views in the county!

“Excellent band, lovely atmosphere, a wonderfully enjoyable event.”

Tenby Museum is currently open daily, from 10 am to 5 pm (last admission 4.30pm).
