Two metal detecting enthusiasts from Tenby were able to reunite the owner of a lost engagement ring with her precious item last week, after making the find on North Beach.

When Jason Sallam, owner of ‘Antiques@The Green’ and his friend Ross Davies of Heywood Court decided to go metal detecting on North Beach on Sunday, August 1, Ross found what he initially thought was a costume jewellery ring a couple of inches down in the sand.

He showed it to Jason who correctly identified it as being an 18ct white gold emerald and diamond engagement ring which sadly someone had lost.

Searching on Facebook to see if anyone had posted that they had lost the ring, Jason came across a site called ‘Tenby Lost and Found’ and a lady by the name of Terri Dabbs had left a post asking if anyone had found her engagement ring.

Jason contacted Terri immediately and asked her for a description and she described the ring that was found!

Terri, from Pontypool, had been in Tenby for a weekend break and realised on that Sunday night that she had lost the ring but thought it was either lost in her mobile home or at the North Beach car park and spent most of Sunday night looking for it - but in the wrong place.

She returned to Tenby last week, with her son Charles, and met up with Ross and Jason, very grateful to have her ring back. Terri very kindly gave them a £100 reward which the pair have elected to donate to Tenby RNLI.

In April of this year, Jason was contacted by a Tenby resident who had lost a ring of sentimental value in her communal back garden the previous October. Never believing she would ever see the ring again, she asked Jason if he could come up with his metal detector and within half an hour, he had found it.

Jason detects the beaches in Tenby regularly during the summer months and all coins found are donated to charity.

Due to lockdown and Covid restrictions over the last year or so, Jason has not yet been able to donate the £500 to Tenby RNLI from finds over that period, but is looking towards presenting the money next month. Jason is also on target to find £500 for Tenby Museum and again, will present it to them in September.

As well as metal detecting on the beaches with his friends searching for ‘treasure’ they also take bags to clean up the beaches to make it safe for holidaymakers and residents alike and have removed bottle tops, tent pegs, fishing hooks, broken glass, nails, screws, fishing hooks and lures as well as general rubbish.

As Covid restrictions lift, Jason would like to set up Tenby Metal Detecting Club and if anyone would like to join, do please contact him at: [email protected]

And if you need help in finding something that you have lost, do please get in touch as Jason and his friends would love to help find it!
