Whether Pembrokeshire County Council should adopt the principles of a charter aiming to tackle housing issues across Wales will be discussed by a task and finish group first.

A Notice of Motion calling on the council to adopt the principles of the Welsh Housing Justice Charter to support its work in developing a strategy to address the housing problems in Pembrokeshire was tabled by Clr. David Lloyd.

At cabinet on Monday (June 29) it was agreed that discussion of the Siarter Cartrefi Cyrmu/Welsh Housing Justice Charter be held by members of the affordable housing task and finish group, set up following a previous motion “highlighting the housing emergency in the county.”

There are eight principles in the charter, some of which are “out of our control” said cabinet member for housing Clr. Michelle Bateman as she backed its referral to the task and finish group.

The principles include declaring a housing emergency in Wales, creating a bill to address housing inequality, protection of communities and Welsh language and culture, reforming social housing provision, addressing second home ownership, reforming planning laws to respond to local needs and creating a citizens’ assembly on housing.

The group will be asked to consider and report back to cabinet which principles be adopted in full or part.
