Wartime Sunderland T9044 has taken to the skies again, thanks to Welsh artist Tim Jenkins. And through the generosity of Sunderland Trust supporters Trevor and Hennie Richter, Tim's painting has returned 'home' to Pembroke Dock. Entitled 'Flight From Oban', the superb Sunderland study was on display at the recent Guild of Aviation Artists annual exhibition in London. Trevor and Hennie Richter attended the official opening on behalf of the Sunderland Trust and were so taken by Tim's painting that they promptly bought it. It was not though to go to the Richter home in Portsmouth - the couple decided to present it to the Sunderland Trust as a thank you for help received when Trevor was writing a book on his father's wartime RAF story. Said Trevor: "We visited the Trust's new Heritage Centre in the Dockyard Chapel a few weeks ago and are so impressed by the new centre and the displays about T9044. The Centre is the right place for the painting to be viewed." Tim Jenkins, originally from Whitland, is a regular visitor to Pembrokeshire and he brought the painting from London and handed it over to the Sunderland Trust at the recent Wings Over Carew event, where the Trust had a stand alongside the Penfro Model Club. Receiving the painting were Trust volunteers Marilyn Mitchell and Margaret Clark. T9044, the subject of the painting, is the Sunderland which sank in the Haven Waterway in November 1940, having flown in from Oban days before. After over 70 years many parts have been recovered from the wreck and are displayed in the Flying Boat Workshop area in the Heritage Centre at the Dockyard Chapel.
