On Thursday, six Nordic walkers travelled to Newgale for what would turn out to be a very bracing walk.
Starting at the National Trust car park adjacent to the Coast Path, they crossed over the road into the Southwood Estate. Their route took them across fields and hills, all quite slippery after the overnight rain. As they approached the brow of a hill for their planned coffee stop, with its views of the beach and coastline, they were saddened to find the gorse now dead and the ground blackened by the summer wild fires. By the time they reached the seafront, the weather was closing in, so leader Brian shortened the planned route.
The stoic group returned along the beach, battling the wind and rain as they climbed up onto the Coast Path. It was a steep climb back to the car park, through yet more burnt scrubland. They drove back to Newgale for a welcome hot cuppa and snack, before starting the long journey home.
Last Saturday, 26 club members including new walker Jane, gathered in Battery Gardens. The weather was grey and windy at times, but thankfully the rain held off for the duration of the walks. Barbara, supported by Monica, led the Speedies group (pictured on the left) via Kiln Park for a walk along the ancient causeway through the marshes, known locally as the Nabbs. Chris, backed by Pat, led the larger Steadies group on a less demanding route through Kiln Park before returning to the town. Paul led a short walk for a very select Steadies-2 group.
After the walk, a few members visited the Craft Show held in Church House to raise funds for Tenby Museum. The rest dispersed to their favourite coffee shops for refreshments or lunch. This was the first truly autumnal walk of the season, but still enjoyed by all who attended.
Tomorrow, Saturday, there will be a choice of walks from New Hedges to Tenby. Details and bus times are as shown on the current programme. For more information about Steps2Health and our programmes, please visit www.steps2health.org.uk.
