Despite a very misty start to the day, the October sunshine soon welcomed over 100 exhibits to the Sunderland Heritage Centre in Pembroke Dock on Saturday for the South Pembrokeshire Coastal Run 2015.
The organisers of this event were Jeff and Sian Edwards from Milford Haven, organisers of the popular Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Run and Western Telegraph Preseli Bluestone Run. They were asked in August by both the Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Clr. Peter Kraus, and the Sunderland Heritage Trust if they could organise a motoring event -the aim for the Mayor was to be a tribute to the WI in this their centenary year!
Over 100 vehicles assembled at the Sunderland Heritage Centre in readiness for the start of the 30-mile run.
Vehicles from the early ’20s to head-turning exhibits from the 21st century, motorbikes and a Fishguard owned Bedford lorry of 1961 vintage took part - this lorry also took part on the South Pembrokeshire Run that Jeff and Sian had organised back in 2004 to honour Pembroke Dock’s 190th anniversary!
There was also an entry (a regular on the Pembrokeshire County Run) from London who took part in this event, along with making a weekend of it in the county!
All 100-plus vehicles crossed over the start line, with Jeff and Sian leading the grand parade in their immaculate and well-known Rover 216 Cabriolet, complete with the Pembrokeshire flag being lowered by the Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Clr. Peter Kraus, and the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Wynne Evans.
The last vehicle in the grand parade was a coach, kindly supplied by Silcox Coaches, loaded with the ladies of the WI, who had an enjoyable and unexpected trip around South Pembrokeshire!
The route included the historic town of Pembroke, Merrion Camp, Castlemartin, the stunning Freshwater West of both Robin Hood and Harry Potter fame, the beautiful village of Angle then onto the halfway stop at the stunning West Angle Bay.
After everyone had either a picnic or a warm welcome in the Wavecrest Café, it was off once more for the final leg of the run which included Maidenwells before crossing over the finish line back at the Sunderland Heritage Centre.
After a friendly ‘get-together’ by all the fellow motoring enthusiasts and the public, along with a visit to the centre, the event came to an end.
Jeff and Sian stated that it was a very enjoyable day and a pleasure to organise, with their grateful thanks to the staff of the Sunderland Heritage Centre, Mayor of Pembroke Dock, chairman of PCC and Pembroke Dock police.
Due to everyone having such an enjoyable time and the event being such a success, the South Pembrokeshire Coastal Run 2016 will take place next October
