RNLI lifeguards rescued two bodyboarders and assisted another four persons back to shore after they were caught in a flash rip current off Freshwater West beach last Thursday afternoon. RNLI lifeguards Ben Williams, Olli Davies-Sourfield, Sam Trevor, Tiggy Burrows and off-duty lifeguard supervisor Adam Pitman spotted the six people struggling after a flash rip current which opened up at Freshwater West beach. The six adults - aged between 18 and 35 - were bodyboarding, swimming and surfing at the southern end to the beach when the flash rip opened up near the bathing area. Ben and Adam rushed into the water on the rescue boards as Sam used the charity's rescue tube to assist the swimmers. Ben made his way to one of the bodyboarers and towed the person back to safety and Sam safely brought the swimmers back to shore. Ben then returned to the scene and joined Adam in escorting the two novice surfers from the rip current to a safe area. Earlier in the week, RNLI lifeguards spotted a person in difficulty and being swept out in a rip current off Freshwater West beach on Tuesday afternoon. A person was kayaking outside the lifeguards' red and yellow flagged bathing area when he was hit by a wave which caused him to fall out of his craft. A nearby body-boarder attempted to help, but also got into difficulty as they both entered the rip current RNLI lifeguard Ben Williams rushed down with a rescue board and quickly brought both the kayaker and bodyboarder safely back to shore. The two casualties were checked by the lifeguards and were both fit and well after their experience. RNLI lifeguard supervisor, Chris Rigby said: "Rip currents are hard to spot and can be very dangerous; this is why it's very important to swim at a lifeguarded beach and take note of the red and yellow flags. If you find yourself in trouble, raise your hand and shout for help. But if you see someone else in trouble please don't try to take part in the rescue yourself, tell a lifeguard or call 999 and ask for the Coastguard." RNLI lifeguards provide a daily safety service on Freshwater West beach from 10 am - 6 pm throughout the summer season.
