Pembroke Town Council has written to the chief executive of the Hywel Dda Health Board expressing 'shock and dismay' over the closure of the Minor Injuries Units at South Pembrokeshire Hospital and Tenby Cottage Hospital.
In the letter to Trevor Putt, town clerk, Hugh Colley wrote: "Councillors were also extremely disappointed that this significant decision was only made public via the local media on Friday, December 9, with no public consultation whatsoever having taken place beforehand.
"This decision is of great concern, not only to residents of Pembroke, but to the whole of south Pembrokeshire, particularly due to the fact that it remains unclear as to whether the closure is a temporary or permanent measure."
Mr. Colley continued: "The MIU at South Pembrokeshire Hospital provides a valuable and well-used service, particularly during the summer months when the population of the area increases considerably due to the influx of tourists.
"Within the catchment area of South Pembrokeshire Hospital, there are numerous infant and junior schools, a large comprehensive school and a considerable number of residential homes - all of which depend on the MIU for the treatment of minor injuries. In addition, Pembroke Refinery and Pembroke Power Station are both situated only a few miles from the hospital.
"During the past 12 months, the MIU at South Pembrokeshire Hospital has dealt with nearly 4,000 patients, with only a small percentage requiring referral to Withybush Hospital."
Mr. Colley continued: "As a consequence of the closure of the MIU, it is contended that there will be a vast increase in the burden on facilities at Withybush Hospital, which will exacerbate demand on an already over-stretched Welsh Ambulance Service.
"In addition, the closures of both MIUs will present a significant problem for those seeking to access services at Withybush Hospital as a substantial percentage of the population do not have access to a vehicle and rely solely on a sporadic public transport service."
He concluded: "Therefore, in view of the above, Pembroke Town Council urges you in the strongest possible terms, to reverse this decision without undue delay and invite you to attend a council meeting so that you can fully appreciate our considerable concerns surrounding the closure of this essential facility."
