This week Shalom House/Ty Shalom celebrates its 10th Anniversary. The Charity was set up in 1997 with the bequest of a house on Nun Street, St Davids. After a significant fundraising effort, the house was adapted in line with recommendations for a Hospice. Shalom House opened to day patients on 23 November 2007. Its function gradually developed to offer day, respite and palliative support to patients and their relatives.

The mission of Shalom House is to provide excellent palliative support to all residents of Pembrokeshire diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. This is a unique service, often working in partnership with other organisations, to provide a place of respite that offers a safe place to share worries and to let go of anxieties albeit briefly. Experienced professional staff support both clients and their families throughout their journey. Shalom House aims to make patients’ lives more comfortable than they would otherwise have been and to enable them to do the things that matter to them. Referrals are from health professionals, families and self-referrals from patients themselves.

Judith Thomas, Shalom House Business Manager, commented, “Shalom has become a much-loved charity, as people remember the care given to their loved ones, and organisations recognise the valuable work we do. We have an amazing group of volunteers and fundraisers and would love more to join us. We depend on donations to continue to offer our services free of charge and this week sees the launch of our 10th Anniversary Appeal. We would like to thank everyone for their support over the last ten years, it’s because you care that we can.” (www.justgiving.com/shalomhouse)
