"It's good to be reminded that our troops are human beings too," said Rob James, Pastor of Westgate Chapel Pembroke. "They have the same needs and feelings as the rest of us, and it is a privilege to support both them and those who are trying to show them God loves them." Rob James was speaking as SASRA'S South Wales Area representative Matthew Glass visited various churches throughout the county last week. "SASRA (The Soldiers' and Airmen's Scripture Reading Association) began very informally among the troops in 1818," explained Rob James, "but today they have charters covering their work with both the army and the airforce "All scripture readers have served in one or other of the armed services. They are all committed Christians and gifted evangelists. They have undergone a period of training and assessment before being deployed to a station with the agreement of the Ministry of Defence. "The scripture readers' main purpose is to share the Christian message with all service personnel who will listen. Their methods will vary, but most of their work seems to be based on personal contact." Expressing his deepest thanks to all those local churches who support the work, Matthew Glass said: "The Welsh are always great supporters of SASRA, especially here in Pembrokeshire. It's been good to advance the work among the SASRA supporting churches." Local scripture reader Bob Eliot added: "I live in Haverfordwest, but worship in Westgate on a Sunday morning. We have a contact with the camp at Castlemartin through RSM Chris Portwood who allows me to speak to the men about their spiritual and moral well-being. The reception I have received there has been excellent. And so overall SASRA is on the advance in Castlemartin." RSM Portwood observed: "I have met Bob on numerous occasions and allowed him access in a controlled manner. I had an idea of what he was doing as an individual, but I had no idea about the organisation, the people it employs and the sincerity of the scripture readers up and down the country. It was so nice to know that God has brought me to this place to help people like Bob spread the Word of God in such a simple way. "I am at the top of the soldier tree. If God can move me to tears and reshape my life, making me think and act differently every day, I want to share that with young soldiers as and when I can. May God bless SASRA and all that make it work, both on the front line and those that support the organisation in whatever form
