Recently the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot welcomed guest speaker David James, a resident of Cosheston, who explained his part in the commemoration, in October 2018, of the one hundred years anniversary of the interment on Angle, of a number of Japanese sailors who died whilst assisting Britain in the protection of the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea during the First World War.

A Japanese boat, helping protect convoys bringing essential supplies to Britain, was hit by a German torpedo and sank off the Pembrokeshire coast. Over the following days and weeks bodies of the sailors were washed up on the beaches and the residents of Angle created a communal grave where they were buried.

When David heard of this, he embarked upon a personal project to create a fitting memorial to their bravery, resulting in the erection of a new stone monument by the grave.

At the time the ceremony, involving Japanese and British officials, was widely reported in local and national news media. David was rightly proud of his achievements and his presentation was well received by club members.

This was an example of the varied program of speakers which the club enjoys each month.
