As part of Child Safety Week, pupils of Pembroke Dock Community School last Friday (June 21) enjoyed a variety of child safety activities organised by Jo Brookman, development officer with Pembrokeshire Communities First.
Child Safety Week is a national campaign that aims to highlight important messages relating to child safety in the home and the community.
In the morning, Year 3 pupils took part in a 'Safe Walk to School Walking Bus' having met Police Community Support Officer Naomi Harrison in the new car park on the town's Bush and Park housing estate. She led the walk along with Communities First staff.
During the afternoon, a 'Keeping Safe Roadshow' engaged pupils in various activities provided by the fire service, RNLI, Safer Pembrokeshire and Neighbourhood Policing Teams.
Years 5 and 6 pupils learnt how to be safe on the beach with RNLI lifeguards, while Years 3 and 4 were able to learn about the functions of the fire engine and, with the help of the fire service, also considered dangers in the home.
Years 1 and 2 pupils had their finger prints placed in a key ring and were given advice when travelling in cars by Safer Pembrokeshire and the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Parents were invited to participate in a quiz with a chance to win £25. Other competitions in school included Key Stage 2 pupils designing their own safety super hero and Foundation Phase pupils colouring safety in the home and community posters.
Among those who attended the day was Pembrokeshire County Councillor Sue Perkins, cabinet member for safeguarding and children's services, who is also a school governor.
She said afterwards: "This was certainly a worthwhile exercise. It was an excellent way to improve the awareness and understanding of how pupils can stay safe in their homes and in the community."
The school is grateful to the fire service, RNLI, Safer Pembrokeshire, Neighbourhood Policing Team and Jo Brookman for their time.
