Following a successful and popular run during late spring and the summer, ‘Rosalind’, the Saundersfoot Bay Heritage Land Train, is extending its operation to weekends in September (with the exception of the Iron Man weekend September 14/15).
The Land Train was introduced in June this year thanks to the work of the Saundersfoot Village Working Party SVWP - a group of volunteers from Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, Saundersfoot Community Council, Saundersfoot Harbour Commission and the Hean Castle Estate. The Welsh Government also provided funding support from ‘LEADER Pembrokeshire’. LEADER is designed to encourage local people, businesses and communities to get involved in innovative projects that aim to test new ideas which benefit the area.
Sue Boughton-Thomas, chair of SVWP, said: “Without this support from LEADER, we would not have been able to introduce what has proved to be a very popular attraction to Saundersfoot. The Land Train has received a lot of very positive comments from happy travellers both on social media and to the driver - in particular the informative and entertaining audio commentary, the ‘Tomos’s Teasers’ quiz sheet and the opportunity to hop on, hop off at Coppet Hall.”
The Land Train takes a circular route from Saundersfoot Harbour up to the Plantation on Sandy Hill Road (with stunning views across the bay), down St Brides Hill, around the village over to Coppet Hall, where it stops before returning to the Harbour.
The introduction of ‘Rosalind’ in 2019 has been a pilot project which has provided he operators with hope that it can be developed and extended in the future.
Tickets for the 30-minute journey can be bought on board - £4 for adults, £2 for children (five - 11 years). There is a lift for wheelchair access. See visitsaundersfootbay.com for more information.
