Residents of a Haverfordwest street have started a petition to save a mature chestnut tree.

The ‘save our tree’ petition is calling on Pembrokeshire County Council to consider all options before potentially cutting down a tree by a boundary wall of Foley House in Goat Street.

More than one hundred people have signed the petition on 38 Degrees so far, which states: “The tree is part of Goat Street and the only street tree we have. It is important for the environment, for the quality of air we breath, for the nesting birds and great source of pollen for the bees in spring.”A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said that a large crack and “outward lean” has formed in a Grade II* listed boundary wall which the authority has a legal duty to maintain.

A survey by council officers concluded that the pressure of the tree on the wall was causing the movement.

Local member Clr. Tom Tudor said: “As the County Councillor for the Castle Ward, I have discussed this situation regarding the tree outside Foley House with the appropriate officers from Pembrokeshire County Council.

“I am informed that all measures are being explored to preserving the tree, and ensuring that it remains an important feature of Goat Street. An independent study is being carried out to ascertain if the tree is salvageable or not.

“At the end of the day, the safety of pedestrians is of paramount importance and if the tree is proven to be unsafe, of poor health, and a danger to the general public then we all must take this on board and accept the outcome.

“I am personally optimistic about the future and longevity of this tree and await in anticipation of the independent report.”
