The leader of Pembrokeshire County Council has praised the work done by the authority’s refuse collection workforce during the pandemic - and asked members of the public to give them a big ‘thank you’ when they are passing.
In his updates to the community this week Clr. David Simpson said: “I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank all our waste and recycling gangs who continue to collect your kerbside collections.
“Can I request that if you see them in your street, please shout out a big ‘thank you’ to them or give then a wave as they are passing. They would really appreciate your support.”
He also said he wanted to thank the public for staying at home over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
“Last week I reinforced the message, which was - and still is - ‘stay at home and help stop the virus spreading.’
“I appreciate that this extended lockdown will be difficult. However, we need to continue as directed in order to beat this pandemic. I am very aware that we are all making sacrifices, I thank you all. Please stay strong and stay safe.
“I am also aware that businesses and individuals are changing their ways to tackle the crisis.
“People are at home making scrub bags and headbands for NHS nurses; local shops are offering home delivery services and volunteers are coming forward all the time. This is all positive and highlights how we can all collectively do our bit.”
Clr. Simpson said that he had been made aware that unfortunately some of the self-shielding letters issued by Welsh Government to people most vulnerable were mistakenly sent to the wrong addresses.
“The Health Minister Vaughan Gething said the letters had now been re-sent - so people should receive them within the next day or two,” he continued.
“I am very aware that front-line staff across our county are working hard to support our communities and people who need assistance with shopping, care provision and general wellbeing – thanks to you all.”
Clr. Simpson reaffirmed that ‘community spirit’ is vital right now, and encouraged people to contact the council’s ‘Community Hub’ if needed by emailing [email protected] or ‘phoning: 01437 776301.
“Please pick up the phone and say hello to a neighbour, family member or friend. It is important that we all keep in touch. A simple phone call and a greeting can help another person get through the day.
“If you are lonely or need day-to-day help please do not think you are a nuisance, pick up the phone to talk to someone. We are all here to support each other.
“Community spirit is vital, even more so now,” he added.
