One hundred and fifty years after the railway first reached Pembroke Dock the town and its remarkable maritime heritage will star in the BBC's iconic series 'Great British Railway Journeys'.
Presenter Michael Portillo - together with his famous Bradshaw's Guide - and a film crew visited the town last August and learned of the remarkable history of the Royal Dockyard and the five Royal Yachts which were built there for Queen Victoria and her family.
Michael Portillo filmed at the new Heritage Centre in the Royal Dockyard Chapel where his guide was naval historian Ted Goddard, a volunteer with the Sunderland Trust which runs the Heritage Centre.
Ted told in particular the story of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert III which was launched at Pembroke Dockyard in 1899. A fine model of this Royal Yacht is displayed at the Heritage Centre.
Michael also called in at the Victorian Gun Tower on Front Street where he met up with Martin Cavaney of the Museum Trust and heard more of the town's history.
The 'Great British Railway Journeys' episode will be on BBC2 on Monday, January 26, at 6.30 pm. It includes filming at Mustang Marine in the former Dockyard and the Gwili Railway near Carmarthen.
