Councillors in Tenby are to write to Pembrokeshire County Council following representations made to them by members of the public that a large number of households did not receive polling cards ahead of the local county council and community council elections back in May.
Speaking at the recent meeting of Tenby town council, Cllr Sue Lane told her fellow members that she believed that parts of the recent election were an ‘absolute disaster’.
“Many didn’t turn up at the polling station to vote as they did not receive their voting card. It actually says on bottom of the card that a card is not necessary to vote but that is not much use if you did not have a card in the first place,” she said.
Cllr Lane said that there had been a 40% turnout in Tenby, but that it should have been a lot higher.
She requested that correspondence be sent to the local authority to find out what happened, and to ascertain if there was a problem with the delivery of polling cards, as she believed that it was not an isolated incident.
“People were sitting at home not turning up to vote as no card was received. We need to flag concerns to PCC,” added Cllr Lane
