Clr. Mrs. Ruth Platt has retained the Mayoral robes of office in Narberth as she begins her fourth term as the town’s First Citizen.

Clr. Mrs. Platt was proposed by Clr. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, seconded by Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees and unanimously appointed at the town council’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.

Serving as her Deputy is Clr. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, who was nominated by the Mayor, seconded by Clr. Mrs. Denise Rigby, and also unanimously given the job.

Town Crier Ceri Barnes announced the appointments, while Rev. Chris Rees blessed the meeting.

Clr. Mike Platt will serve as the Mayor’s consort.

“The last 12 months have passed so quickly, but it has been an enjoyable one,” said Clr. Mrs. Platt, who also served as Mayor in 2009/10 and 2013/14.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Mike for being my consort once again, for his support and taking me to all the events, even though sometimes he was not so well, but never complained.

“To Caroline, our town clerk, who was always on hand in person and at the end of the ’phone if a problem arose.

“Also to you as councillors who have been there for advice and guidance if needed and to thank you all for attending as many meetings as possible, also for being very courteous and the meetings not getting too hot. I think we are one of the best councils in Pembrokeshire as we do not have many upsets between us, and if we do, it is all done and dusted. Please continue to do so.

“I would like to thank our County Councillor Elwyn Morse for all his assistance over the last 12 months, and also I would like to welcome County Councillor Vic Dennis who I am sure will assist in any way he can for the council and electors of Narberth.

“May I take this opportunity to thank our link officers, Chris Harrison and Barry Cooke, for all their advice and help they have given us and hope that this service by them will long continue.”

Clr. Mrs. Platt also reflected on events over the last 12 months.

“Civic Week was a good week once again and the committee need to be commended on their planning and organising of events as this does take a lot of preparation, more than most people would think,” she said.

“Narberth Winter Carnival was not held due to various reasons, but hopefully will go ahead this year.

“Thank you, too, to the charities and organisations who make you most welcome when you attend their events.

“One of the down sides for the town at the moment is the old CP school situation which we are still linking with Pembrokeshire County Council as to what will be the outcome.”

There was special mention to the recently retired Eric Feetham.

Clr. Mrs. Platt said: “I would also like to wish Eric and Doris Feetham all the best for the future and to thank Eric for all his dedication and service to the town council for over 49 years.”

Concluding she added: “This is my fourth time as Mayor, so I will do my best for the town of Narberth and the electors, as I have done in the past. Thank you for putting your trust in me once again.”

Clr. Mrs. Platt’s charities for the year will be the senior citizens in Narberth and Moggies in Need.

The annual civic parade and service will take place on the opening day of Civic Week in July.
