It will be a busy day at the polling stations on Thursday, May 5, as elections for the National Assembly for Wales take place on the same day. Here we take a look at the local Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire candidates for the Assembly:
Plaid Cymru - Simon Thomas
Simon Thomas has been Mid and West Wales Assembly Member for the last five years. He has fought to save our services at Withybush Hospital, for a VAT cut for tourism businesses, to abolish tolls on the Cleddau Bridge, and for better GP services in south Pembrokeshire.
Simon has successfully campaigned to retain the Avenue Centre, restore Tenby’s Minor Injuries Unit this Easter, and secured a Welsh Government review of the impact of the Cleddau Bridge tolls.
He was a development manager for Technium in Pembrokeshire, before being appointed senior special advisor to the One Wales Government, advising Plaid Cymru Ministers. He is a former MP.
Before his election as a MP he worked as a rural development manager with Jigso and an anti-poverty officer.
He was educated at Aberdare Boys’ Grammar School; Aberystwyth University and intially trained as a librarian.
He is married and has two children.
Wales Green Party - Val Bradley
I have lived in Pembrokeshire since 1975 after leaving London and the Sunday Times.
My three children were born here and I had a professional career coaching riders to National and International level. I am a registered foster carer, I was a fundraiser for the Bloomfield Community Centre, an organiser for the Narberth Children’s Festival, fundraiser for the Haverfordwest Skate Park, served on Narberth Town Council for ten years and I led the campaign for an Independent Enquiry into the Sea Empress Disaster.
The Wales Green Party will fight to preserve the environment, our hospital, develop renewable energy with all the myriad opportunities that it offers, fight to protect the vulnerable victims of austerity, fight for affordable, efficient housing, sustainable profitable farming and businesses and recognise and try to mitigate the effects to our community of climate change.
Conservative - Angela Burns
I live in Cosheston with my husband, two children and assorted dogs and after 25 years in business it’s been an absolute privilege to serve as your Assembly Member reflecting your concerns, worries and hopes to Labour Ministers in Cardiff Bay.
From my office in Tenby my staff and I have dealt with over 7,500 individuals in the past five years on a range of issues from fighting alongside families and carers to keep the Avenue Centre, to promoting solutions to GP shortages and support for businesses. I’ve challenged the County Council, the Health Board and the Welsh Labour Government to be more efficient, inclusive and perform better.
I came into Politics because of the NHS and it’s still the biggest concern to me and most of you. The Welsh Conservatives will restore Tenby’s MIU, enhance services at Glangwili and bring back services like SCBU to Withybush. Unlike Labour and Plaid I’ve never voted for a budget that cuts funds to the NHS. I never will.
Chris Overton - Independent Save Withybush Save Lives
I am a Doctor not a politician. I have worked solely for the NHS for 34 years, 17 as Consultant Obstetrician at Withybush. I have never undertaken private practice. I believe the NHS should be the best health care provider in the world and should be available and accessible equally for all of us.
This is why I have fought for 11 years to save services in Pembrokeshire from a position of relative weakness as an NHS whistleblower with management watching my every move and making life difficult for me at every opportunity.
Elect me on May 5 and let me act for you on a level playing field in the Assembly as your AM.
I have a plan for NHS Wales which will provide safe, sustainable, equitable and fair provision of health care to every person in Wales.
It is possible to have an A&E within one hour and an Obstetric Unit within 20 minutes of labouring women across Wales. I have shared it with the Welsh Government but it wasn’t politically viable for them. You can’t trust politicians because they want to interfere and play politics with the NHS.
Give me the chance to convince them that a cross party consensus on health care is needed, not delivered to benefit any political party and make them more electable, but to benefit the citizens of Wales.
If you want true, honest, transparent and dogged determination to represent all your interests from your AM then vote for me on May 5.
Welsh Labour - Marc Tierney
I grew up in west Wales. After university I returned to join the management team at Radio Pembrokeshire. For twelve years I’ve worked in the third and public sectors broadening my understanding of the local economy.
I live with my partner Sarah and our three children near Narberth. I understand the challenges facing our towns and villages.
As a candidate, I’ve stepped forward to support our local communities. The NHS is my top priority, speaking up for patients in Tenby and our local hospital services. I’m supporting local volunteers to save Narberth Library from closure and secured support for those who lost their jobs in Friday Ad, Pembroke Dock. I’ll work hard to get our economy back on track.
This election is about the future. We need an AM who cares about our people, is passionate about our communities and positive about our public services.
I’ll be a new voice with fresh ideas for our future, working hard to represent you in the Assembly.
UKIP - Allan Brookes
If you vote for me: I will be there for you. I’ll make sure I am accessible.
I will take your concerns and issues to the Welsh Assembly and fight for your case.
I’ll do all I can to return our Special Baby Unit to Withybush and work with others of a like mind.
I have run my own small business and so I’m used to organisation and leadership. What’s more, I haven’t been in politics long enough to be politically correct or even corrupt! And I would count on my associates, constituents and friends to keep me grounded.
I’m committed to reducing wasted resources and spending which could be better used to fund all kinds of important services such as improved health care and education.
In our constituency we have 12.52 per cent ( 6,420 people) of the population working as self-employed many of whom are struggling against high business rates and red tape which I would seek to reduce drastically. I would like to see so many more men and women encouraged to start their own businesses.
Give Change a Chance. Vote for Allan Brookes to be there for you in the Welsh Assembly.
Welsh Liberal Democrats - Alistair Cameron
Alistair grew up in Pembrokeshire and attended Pentlepoir Primary, Greenhill School, Tenby and Bristol University. His father, Ron Cameron, represented Amroth on Pembrokeshire County Council. His uncle, Herbert Cameron, was Deputy Head at Laugharne Primary School.
Alistair has worked in the public and private sectors and currently teaches English at a further education college.
He want to keep Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire councils and opposes plans to recreate Dyfed County Council. Better services can be provided through the councils working closer together and sharing resources.
He wants to abolish the Cleddau Bridge tolls and supports keeping Tenby Avenue Centre for vulnerable adults.
