Local councillors have questioned why they weren’t consulted on works at Heywood Lane to improve pedestrian safety and access and add new playing fields to the school grounds.

A Pembrokeshire County Council scheme to improve pedestrian safety and access along the road that features primary and secondary schools got underway during the school holidays.

The scheme also realigns the driveway into Greenhill School to allow for an additional full-size rugby pitch on their campus, which involves moving the road into the area created by the demolition of the infants’ school; the creation of a roundabout and pedestrian crossing at the end of Serpentine Road; demolition of the caretaker’s bungalow; and re-alignment of the playing fields. Two full-sized pitches and a running track are also being provided.

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, when discussing a planning application from the county council for the removal of the existing trees, members asked why they hadn’t been consulted on the full plans, and just the tree TPO order.

“It’s strange we’re being asked about the tree application, but were never informed about the full works there,” stated Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter,

“It beggar’s belief that we weren’t included on the new primary school plans in the first place!” she added, with her colleague, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, also querying the matter.

“It does raise one question that if they’re creating a new rugby pitch, then why wasn’t this tree application made before those works were commissioned? If the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority turned this aspect down, then surely the whole scheme would be up in the air!

“Someone needs to look at the project management of the education department,” he added.

The town clerk told members that the county council were giving advance notice of a temporary road closure at Heywood Lane, commencing on Saturday, October 28, for seven days, at the start of the half-term holidays.

The junction from Serpentine Road to Heywood Court will be closed to allow works on the project to take place. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
