Pembroke town walls are in much private ownership, as they form individual garden walls, and in places the walls have become so overgrown and ruinous that they are in danger of collapse.

The town walls have now become a focus for a steering group, made up of owners and residents, recently convened to look into forming a charitable trust which could access grant funding from a number of sources.

Its remit would be to indentify and maximise funding opportunities, and to raise awareness of the significance of the town walls both locally and nationally.

In order to qualify for major Heritage Lottery Funding, the repair of the walls will need to form part of a wider strategy for Pembroke which would include community support and involvement, interpretation, education and training.

Some of this work has already been started by the existing Pembroke21C community group and it is hoped that the two groups can work together to achieve the overall project aims.

Town wall owners will now be canvassed on whether they would be interested in leasing their section of wall to the trust, and if suitable levels of interest are shown the trust will work towards securing funds.
