The Pembroke Probus 'Poems and Pints' on November 8 was an enjoyable evening. As far as I was concerned, the highlight was the singing. There was an unavoidable shortage of male members of the choir, but luckily they were reinforced by Dawn Homfray. If I may be so bold, this was a stroke of genius, Dawn certainly added tone to the singing. I was reminded of Red Ingle and his Natural Seven singing Temptation. On the track that I have, Jo Stafford gives it class. I rest my case.
Our club meeting, on November 19 opened and, as ever, the president and his team convinced club members that all was well with the club and welcomed Colin Johnson, of the Christian Malford Probus Club, to the meeting. He was the guest of vice-president Robert Gorman.
The 'hot seat' this time was taken by a video tape of a conversation/interview of Cecil Davies by Trevor Payne. This took place 1993/4 and was assembled by Pembroke Probus founder president Dennis Tidswell Well done sir! The story that unfolded was a fascinating account of a career in the grocery trade. Cecil Davies started as an errand boy delivering groceries on a 'box bike', rapidly rising to manager and finally owning his business in Pembroke. It is a form of business that is virtually extinct today , overtaken and over-shadowed by the omnipresent supermarkets.
One valid point in the midst of the nostalgia. Accidents in the trade were discussed, particularly one with a bacon slicer. The point was made that this was the sort of unforeseen incident that made the Minor Injuries Unit in Fort Road essential.
