The skilled team at RWE Generation’s Pembroke Power Station will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the festive season to help power 3.5 million homes.
The 2200 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant has had millions of pounds of investment this year to ensure it is one of the UK’s most flexible and efficient gas fired power plants. Generating electricity is a round-the-clock operation, and the festive period is no exception. The power station employs 100 skilled local people of which 15 are from entry programme schemes.
In 2017, the station produced 13TWh or four per cent of the UK’s electricity and is a proud member of the local community. Since the plant has been in commercial operation, the company has donated around £200k to the local community; made up of sponsorship, donations and charity fundraising activities.
The team at Pembroke will be playing a valuable role in helping to provide the nation with a secure supply of energy, particularly when demand increases across the UK. The Christmas and New Year shifts teams are expecting a busy day, starting up all five units in the morning and operating them through the day.
Pembroke Power Station manager Andrew Morgan said: “We have had another tough year with exceptionally cold weather that lasted for some months. The station has a dedicated team who are highly skilled and who have the ability to bring this plant on and off, safely and flexibly, hundreds of times throughout the year. In doing this we are truly helping the energy transformation.
“Electricity needs to be produced as it’s required, 365 days a year. So it’s thanks to the dedication and hard work of our staff that we can operate.”
