A group of 13 Pembrokeshire cyclists and their support crew last week cycled from Pembrokeshire to Paris to raise funds for three local charities.
They set off from Haverfordwest on Sunday September 6, arriving at the Eiffel Tower six days later.
The cycle was 548 miles long, a total of 37 hours in the saddle and they climbed over 27,000 feet of hills throughout the UK and France routes to arrive at the famous Paris land mark .
Thousands of pounds have been collected for Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cancer, Pembrokeshire Autism Society and Pembrokeshire’s Riding for the Disabled facilities. The grand total will be revealed at a presentation evening at Wolfscastle Country Hotel on October 9.
Among the riders was Alan Bain who was the most senior of the group at the grand age of 74. The rest of the cyclist had so much admiration for his efforts and was totally inspired by what he achieved.
All the riders paid for the costs themselves, so 100 per cent of the funds raised will go to the charities. The ride was organised by a small committee (Kevin and Hannah Jones, Graham and Lisa Williams, Colin Picton and Tim Hughes) who also took part in the cycle.
Colin said “it was an experience I will never forget. I am not sure really what the hardest part was … the legs or a sore behind!. I would like to thank everyone who made this possible including all the people that has donated, supported and corporately sponsored.”
Also taking part was local DJ and Radio Pembrokeshire presenter Toby Ellis.
He said: “Every year I like to raise money for various charities, so when I heard about this bonkers challenge, I thought to myself why not?
Lisa Williams, who drove one of the four support vehicles described the experience as “absolutely amazing”.
She added, “The riders did a phenomenal job and the money they raised is going to make a substantial difference to the three local charities. There was great banter between them all, and while there were a few hairy moments with vehicles, most were really supportive.”
Everyone is welcome to the presentation evening in Wolfscastle (although space is limited). For tickets, contact Lisa at ProNails in Haverfordwest.
