A partnership which has taught every Year 6 pupil living near the Milford Haven Waterway about its significance to the economy and environment has been hailed a success. The Port of Milford Haven teamed up with the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience at the start of the year with the aim of educating young people about the wide range of activities that take place at the UK's third largest port. Marten Lewis, manager at the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience, along with Samantha Williams and Sid Howells, led the first half of the sessions which entailed a minibus trip from Blackpool Mill to Gelliswick, calling in at Carew Castle and the Cleddau Bridge to learn about the tide and the marine environment, and looking at the industry around the Waterway. The trip ended with a tour of the port's headquarters in Milford Haven and talks by key members of staff that updated the pupils on the port's renewable energy projects and its efforts to become carbon neutral. This was then followed up by a hands-on workshop at each of the schools. The main aim for the port was to educate the pupils who live around the Waterway about its importance to the local and national economy. Corporate affairs director at the port of Milford Haven Mark Andrews is pleased with how the programme went, commenting: "Working with Marten and his team has enabled us to reach a large number of students who will hopefully now have a greater understanding of what we do and the range of careers available on their doorstep. Recent research has revealed there is a shortage of skilled potential recruits coming forward for jobs in the marine industry, but with almost 200 people employed at the port, there are many opportunities that could be considered as a career path. Marten manages to make the learning experience fun and interactive for pupils so they are enthusiastic about what they're being taught." Marten Lewis from the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience added: "I am delighted with how the project went. Working in partnership with the Port of Milford Haven always creates fantastic opportunities for young people in Pembrokeshire to experience the amazing environment, globally important industry, and great careers that the Milford Haven Waterway provides. We look forward to working with the team at the Port in the future."
