To celebrate Shrove Tuesday, a pancake night party was held at Lawrenny Sports Club. An early evening start of 6 pm was chosen so that families could come along, and the evening was very well supported.
The star of the night was Billy James, the renowned local pancake chef, who cooked and tossed pancakes all evening non-stop. People queued for their pancakes and were generous with their donations. They were able to help themselves to lemon and sugar, maple syrup, apricot brandy, Nutella and cream, as well as savoury fillings.
David and Jo Cole had prepared a fantastic wall quiz for the children, and they really enjoyed it. There were lots of squeals when they realised that they knew the answers. There was a tie of three with the same high score, and the overall winner, decided by a tie breaker question, was Katie Jones.
Then came the pancake races. The adult race was won jointly by John Gossage and Junko, a visitor from Oxford, who received their prizes of eggs and flour.
The children’s race was won by Sarah Lort-Phillips who was received sweets as a prize.
The raffle had lots of kindly donated prizes.
Many thanks to everyone who supported this event, and to the people who worked so hard to make it a success in particular Billy James, James Phillips on the bar and Ann Cole who manned the kitchen all evening.
