Over 60 ‘Cymru Knievels’ dare-devil dressed riders will descend on Tenby again next year for an annual charity event and this year a world record attempt!
The RIDE Cymru motorcycle event will again return to the perimeter lanes of Wales between May 2 and 6.
Each year since 2012 a regular stop has been the quayside at Tenby, and 2019 will again see the event congregate for its annual group pic at the resort’s harbour area.
First undertaken in 2012, the annual event follows the outer perimeter roads and lanes of Wales, which is 1,070 miles - over 200 miles further than Lands End to John O’Groats.
The event is undertaken over five days, with entrants motorcycling for up to 10hrs per day.
Entrants have to register for entry to the event and then raise sponsorship as a condition of entry.
The event has raised £47,000 between 2012 and 2018, and on the 2019 event it is hoped to raise between £10,000 to £15,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
In 2015 the event theme adopted the legendary dare devil ‘Evel Knievel’, and for the first time all riders wore his trademark Knievel suits all around Wales.
The ‘Cymru Knievels’ was a big success - bringing fun, colour, nostalgia and positivity to the event and the towns we pass on its perimeter route.
News spread to national magazines and also across the Atlantic.. Alicia Knievel-Vincent daughter of Evel learned of our event on the internet and sent a message of support prior to the 2017 event; ’Your event is a great legacy to my father, he would have been very proud - and I too would like to one day join you and motorcycle around Wales’..
Support from the Knievel family has since been added with messages from Evel’s son Kelly too. This has helped the event to attract special guests and also include special venue stops along its perimeter route.
The 2019 event will officially start at Wrexham town centre in north east Wales on Thursday, May 2 starting at 9 am prompt by the town mayor.
Day 1 is an intensive trek following the Welsh border back lanes concluding at Monmouth, before the next day follows the south Wales coast line with stops at Cardiff and Pembrey Circuit before concluding in Carmarthen.
Day 3 will be started by the mayor of Carmarthen at 9 am (on Saturday May 4) and will include stops at Tenby at 11 am, Pembroke Dock at 1 pm, St Davids (4 pm), Cardigan (6 pm) before concluding at Aberystwyth at 8 pm.
Day 4will include stops at Portmeirion, Anglesey Circuit and Holyhead, before day 5 sees a Bank Holiday ride including stops at Beaumaris, Llandudno and complete at Wrexham town centre at 5pm.
Provisional guest list for RIDE Cymru 2019 includes Ruth Wignall TV Weather girl and presenter; Dave Hailwood son of legend 60s/70s bike race Mike Hailwood; Richard Jones of the band Stereophonics, Danny John-Jules from TV’s Strictly and Red Dwarf; actor Steve Keys TV Producer and co host of Unlikely Bikers, and Nick Sanders World record motorcycle adventurer.
In addition the organisers have contacted Guinness World Records to apply for ‘most people dressed as Evel Knievel’ to be recognised as a record - and subject to their approval the 2019 event will also be a new world record the organisers hope.
