Story time for children at Pembroke Dock Community School is now even more stimulating and interactive, both at school and at home - thanks to a fabulous new project worked on by the school in partnership with Springboard.

The project, called 'Story Sack challenge' brought parents and grandparents together to hand-make story sacks containing all the principal characters from 12 popular stories selected by the school's literacy co-ordinator.

Andrea Davies, the highly accomplished tutor leading the project, was hugely impressed by the quality of the characters the Springboard students made for each story sack.

A great deal of time and effort was shown by all involved - to the point that teaching staff at the school were convinced that the items looked too good to be true!

At the launch of the story sacks, the children were entranced by the skills of storyteller Melissa Holloway, especially as her tales were so fabulously supported by all the beautiful hand-made characters she was able to use for each story.

Since the launch, children at Pembroke Dock Community School have been able to take the story sacks home with them over the weekend to enjoy with their families.

Headteacher Michele Thomas is hoping that the sacks will help raise literacy levels in the school - a key priority for all schools in Wales.
