'Old Sledge' will be appearing at Pennar Community Hall, Pennar, Pembroke Dock, next Friday September 30.
Old Sledge is a hard driving, real-deal hillbilly string band from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, reviving old time country and blues from the turn of the 20th century with a young punk attitude and creativity more reminiscent of indie rock.
Far from being urban imitators of string band music, their roots run deep into the heart of the living tradition. This band represents the best players in the new revival of southern mountain music. Blowing the dust off old tunes and songs from the golden era of early country, hillbilly and blues music, their performances breathe new life into old obscure tunes, bringing an immediacy to the music instead of just being re-enactors of an antiquated tradition.
Old Sledge is led by front man Chance McCoy, multiple time Fiddle Champion of West Virginia and one time star of the BBC television show 'Folk America'. Being a native of Appalachia, Chance learned his music directly from the old masters and is now considered one of the finest traditional players in America, not only on the fiddle, but as a singer as well.
Providing the driving rhythm guitar, singing lead and harmony vocals is the musical gypsy of the south Sabra Guzman.
Together, Chance and Sabra create a powerful vocal harmony patterned on the classic brother duets from the 1920s south. They are joined by Clawhammer Banjo virtuoso Luke Richardson from Tennessee.
Tickets are £7 each and can be booked with Liz Cook by telephone on 01646 621811 or on the door on the night, doors open at 7.30 pm.
