Saundersfoot has opened a fantastic new sports facility thanks to teamwork from the community.
The Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) located on the former tennis court area by Saundersfoot’s Regency Hall, was officially opened last Thursday.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by the MUGA’s inaugural game of football, played between youngsters’ teams from Gorse Hill and The Ridgeway, encouraged by their own cheerleaders.
Saundersfoot Community Council has long held a vision to provide the village with a MUGA and up-to-date tennis court.
During the planning stage, the council entered the scheme into the Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme and was not only shortlisted as one of the three successful Pembrokeshire projects but won the public vote for the top level of funding.
Thanks to this money, together with further contributions from the Camrose Lodge of Saundersfoot RAOB Club and funding from Saundersfoot Community Council’s annual precept, the facilities really do now belong to the community of Saundersfoot.
“The opening of the MUGA was a very proud and privileged event for all those present,” Said the village’s community council chairman Clr. Anthony Mattick
“It has come about following a great deal of hard work by a small minority group, with additional financial backing and Saundersfoot’s Buffs Club.
“As a result, the wider community of Saundersfoot now has a first-class facility that should serve us all well for many years to come,” he added.
Joining community councillors past and present and members of the Buffs Club were representatives of Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club, the project architect and numerous contractors, who helped turn the vision into a reality; local PCSOs and Saundersfoot residents and visitors.
