Residents and schoolchildren in Lamphey are taking advantage of a new and extended footpath which has just been completed in the village.

The footway improvement has been funded from Pembrokeshire County Council's Minor Works budget following a request by Lamphey Community Council for a new footway in October, 2012.

The link now connects the east and west of the village for pedestrians.

It extends the recently completed footways on the Freshwater East road to the village shop and filling station and to the local primary school.

The footpath also provides a safe route to the village amenities for the residents of the Cleggar Park housing estate.

The county councillor for Lamphey, Tessa Hodgson, said: "I am delighted to see this footpath open. It now provides a vital safe pedestrian link for children and adults in the village.

"My thanks to the team at Pembrokeshire County Council for bringing the scheme to fruition; to the main contractors, Evan Pritchard, and to Mr. John Fisher, of Lamphey Garage, whose generous donation of land enabled the crucial final link to the school to be completed."

The headteacher of Lamphey School, Simon Thomas, said: "As a health promoting school, we always try to encourage families to walk or cycle to and from school.

"With the support of the county council, the routes to school have now been made safer for all pedestrians, especially children attending the school. Hopefully it will encourage all families to use the car less and be more active."
