A town councillor wants to make sure that winter festivities in Tenby don’t freeze up this year.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that it was a shame that discussions between the ‘Christmas Festivities’ committee, that had recently taken place, appeared to favour just one event in the town in December, rather than a host of weekends with events leading up to the big day.
“The idea was to fill the town with activities and events throughout December, but now it appears that it comes back to just one weekend, which is not what we set out to do,” she said.
“I know last year was a bad year, but I feel we’re going backwards and not forwards.
“I understand that people want to focus on the main weekend when Father Christmas arrives in town, but it would be nice to see the Chamber of Trade and the Tenby Lions take on a weekend each that month too,” continued Clr. Lane.
The ‘Festivities’ committee outlined at their recent meeting what their objectives were, with the objectives - to make Tenby a Christmas destination; promote shopping in the town; encourage people into town; provide entertainment; ensure the town is well presented (i.e Christmas lighting and tree; involve businesses and community groups.
It was felt by the committee that every person had a vision for events and activities occurring every week in December, however the viability of staging the events all boiled down to the same people providing the manpower, therefore one event at this present time was the united decision made.
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown agreed with her fellow councillor and said that the events throughout December needed more support.
“It’s the same two people from the Chamber of Trade that come to these ‘Festivities’ meetings, so I don’t feel we’re getting the organisation’s full support,” she commented.
“The Lions also used to put on a craft fair, so that could be part of the festival.
“The idea is to attract people from outside into Tenby to visit the shops as well as enjoy the festive activities. We seem to be putting everything on the table and picking things up ourselves,” added Clr. Mrs. Brown.
The Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, said that if the ‘Festivities committee’ decided to stage just one event, it was not deterring any other local organisation from coming forward with fresh ideas for alternate days.
“We can’t run everything ourselves, it requires everybody in the town to contribute,” said Clr. Blackhall
