Employees and contractors at Valero's Pembroke refinery have voted for Macmillan Cancer Support as their Charity of the Year for 2013, a charity with which the refinery has a long history.

Jane James, Valero PGPA manager, said: "Cancer is something that touches so many people, so we are delighted that Macmillan has been selected as our Charity of the Year for 2013. It underlines Valero's commitment to taking a leadership role in the communities in which we live and work and in supporting and encouraging employee involvement."

Sue Reece, Macmillan fundraiser for south-west Wales, was delighted that Macmillan has been selected as 2013 Charity of the Year.

"Almost 100 percent of Macmillan's income comes from giving and fundraising so our involvement with Valero over the course of a year is invaluable for us to maintain the right support for people affected by cancer."

Macmillan works as a support for all those affected by cancer. As well as supporting patients, Macmillan also helps carers, families and communities, as well as funding nurses and health care specialists. The charity also builds cancer care centres.

Valero's Pembroke refinery has a long history of community engagement and support throughout the county of Pembrokeshire. As well as over 100 organisations and good causes supported by the company each year, the status of Charity of the Year provides special focus for colleagues' extra fundraising efforts.
