Dozens of children from schools across Pembrokeshire have vowed to play their part in combating climate change by taking part in an npower Climate Cops Academy.

Golden Grove Primary School in Pembroke hosted one of three Climate Cop Academies held in the county.

Pupils were shown some simple ways to save energy in an exciting and engaging way.

The interactive day was filled with activities, including generating electricity with body movement, working with miniature examples of renewable energy sources using thermal imaging cameras to see how much heat is emitted from the human body and the effects of insulation.

Year 5 teacher, Wayne Davies, said the event had increased awareness of climate change and the opportunities for making a positive contribution to saving energy.

"This event links into the work we already do within the curriculum on sustainability. The knowledge and understanding they have gained through Climate Cops have made a very positive contribution,' said Mr. Davies.

"The sessions are short and snappy and this is very beneficial in maintaining the children's attention.'

The Climate Cops also visited Monkton Primary School and Pembroke Dock Community Primary School - teaching children some simple ways of saving energy.

Mair Lewis, community liaison officer at Pembroke Power Station, said the Climate Cops programme is inspiring young people to get involved in energy efficiency.

"We are delighted with the response this programme has received in Pembrokeshire, we have had excellent feedback from pupils and teachers,' she said. "One little girl even asked if we could come to the school every day!'

The Climate Cops programme travels the length and breadth of the country visiting schools in a bid to help them become greener and follows the Government's National Framework for Sustainable Schools.

Working with local councils, they provide schools with free energy audits and recommendations to help them to reduce their carbon footprint.
