Stories of beach-goers urinating on sands and litter strewn on dunes have surfaced once again as lockdown measures eased on Monday with regards to visiting local beaches in Pembrokeshire - with the public urged to please take their rubbish home.
Despite coastal car parks and paths remaining closed, plenty of people made the most of the soaring temperatures to visit the county’s beaches yesterday, after the Welsh Government stated that it was now acceptable to sunbathe.
Police and authorities have made it clear that you are not entitled to travel more than 5 miles to reach the beach or coastal areas.
However, many have taken to social media to urge the local authorities to re-open public toilets, whilst also urging beach-goers to clear up after themselves.
One person posted on Facebook on Monday evening that with public conveniences still closed, it had led to some people who had made it over to the sands in Saundersfoot urinating ‘on the beach, in the alley ways and behind the boats on the car park’.
It was also stated that with some bins sealed, seagulls were seen ‘ripping apart’ nappies, chip boxes and rubbish left by visitors, with ice cream wrappers blowing everywhere.
“Get your finger out council and start opening up services that we pay for - lockdown is easing and there will be many more people about!” stated the poster.
Posting on Facebook on Tuesday morning, Jo Richards’ photos showed a wealth of litter that was left by Angle beach after Monday, despite the car park being closed.
“My blood is boiling - and the bins aren’t even full!” she stated.
A flurry of empty beer bottles and fish and chip cartons were also spotted left on Tenby’s North Beach on Monday evening.
Displaying photographic evidence on the ‘Pembrokeshire - I Love It’Facebook group, Duncan Bruce said that Barafundle beach had been turned into a ‘rubbish dump’ since lockdown rules eased.
“Not being someone who normally dwells on the more depressing aspects of human behaviour, especially on a group which is supposed to celebrate this areas beauty, I felt the need to share these images.” he said.
“In the last few days, coinciding with the easing of lockdown, Barafundle has been turned into a rubbish dump!
“This is just a small portion of what has been left strewn across the beach and dunes.
“In the most part this has been left by the large groups of teenagers that have obviously gone to quite some effort to get to the beach in the last few days and consists mainly of bottles and cans of fruit cider, plastic bottles and disposable barbecues.
“Hopefully by highlighting this problem whoever is responsible for this can either stay away or just take their rubbish home,” he added.
Despite some lockdown regulations easing, the authority for Pembrokeshire Coast National Park which remains closed, has urged people not to travel to the park.
“We appreciate how much people are missing the National Park, including the beaches and access to the outdoors but we ask for everyone’s continued patience,” said PCNPA, chief executive Tegryn Jones.
“While Welsh lockdown restrictions on outdoor gatherings are easing from June 1 - it is vital that people follow the advice to stay local, travel no more than five miles and avoid popular beauty spots and crowded places wherever possible.”
