Sir,
Supermarkets often get a negative press when it comes to their dealings with farmers and the way they source their products, so it is only right that when they do something positive we, as dairy farmers, should give them credit where it is due.
Our thanks must go to Tesco for supporting our local dairy farmers here in West Wales through what has been a grim time with continued low milk prices. They have very generously paid a winter supplement (basically a ‘top up’) for all our cheese that they purchase through First Milk’s Haverfordwest Creamery. As yet, no other retailer has offered similar support.
They must be commended for recognising the importance of the family run dairy farm, which produces cheese to the highest animal welfare, environmental and food safety standards. It would not be an exaggeration to say it has been a lifeline. So Tesco -thank you for helping to protect our livelihoods and for supporting us in our time of need.
Di Clements,
